The results of your searches are displayed on a Search Results page. This page gives you access to all items in The Wellesley Index containing your search term(s). A reminder of what you searched for is included at the top of the page, along with an indication of how many records have been retrieved.
The following information, where available, displays for each entry in the Search Results:
To add all the items in your Search Results page to the Marked List check the Mark/Clear all results on this page checkbox near the top of the page. The items will be displayed with a new background colour to indicate that they have been added to the Marked List.
To add individual items in your Search Results to the Marked List check the Add to Marked list checkbox below each item you wish to add. The items will be displayed with a new background colour to indicated that they have been added.
Items added to the Marked List will be kept there for the duration of your session. The number of items contained in the Marked List is shown next to the Marked List link in the panel to the right of the page.
Relevance ranking works according to where the search terms entered in the Keyword search field are found within a record. It is only the terms in the Keyword search field that are used to determine relevance, so if this field is left empty then your results will be sorted differently- see What order are my results sorted in? and How can I change the order my results are sorted in? below.
How relevant a record is depends on several factors:
You can view the Full record for an entry in the Articles section by clicking the Article title in the Search Results.
To view the Pseudonym Full record, click the Pseudonym in an entry on the Search Results.
To view the Contributor Full record, click the Conrtibutor information link in an entry on the Search Results.
To view the Periodical Introduction Full record, click the Periodical title link in an entry on the Search Results.
Use the Modify search link to return to the search page with your original search terms intact so you can edit them and re-execute your search.
You can store a search in the Saved searches area of My Archive for use at a later date by clicking the Save search terms to My Archive link. You will be prompted to give your search a name to identify it easily in the list of saved searches.
This page appears if you have executed a search across more than one record type.
If you have searched across more than one record type the results are grouped into sections by record type, e.g. Articles, Contributors, Pseudonyms and Periodical Introductions. By default, The Wellesley Index searches all record types. The links at the top of the page allow you to jump directly to the results for a particular type, and also show how many records of each type have been retrieved.
A maximum of five (5) matches will appear in each section of the Search Results. If there are more than 5, you can click the More... link. A dedicated Search Results page will appear (see below for information on features specific to this page), containing all results (or access to all results) for that category.
The results in the Articles set are sorted chronologically by earliest date, with a secondary sort order of periodical title.
The results in the Contributors set are sorted alphabetically by contributor.
The results in the Pseudonyms set will be ordered alphabetically by pseudonym, with a secondary sort order of alphabetically by real name.
The results in the Periodical Introductions set will be ordered by relevance, weighted by periodical title.
This page appears if you have executed a search for a single content type using the Limit to options on the search page, or if you have clicked a 'More…' link at the foot of a section on the Search Results: All page.
A maximum of 500 records will be returned for each category (except in the case of the 43 Periodical Introduction records).
The following sort options are available:
Articles
Note that by default records in the Articles dataset are sorted chronologically by earliest date; the easiest way to view results at the end of the list is to re-sort the results in reverse chronological order so that the most recent records appear at the top of the list.
Contributors
Pseudonyms
Periodicals Introductions
To change the sort order, click the arrow next to the Sort results drop-down list, choose the option you require and click the Sort button.
You can choose to display either 20 or 50 records per page. By default, The Wellesley Index displays 20 records per page. To change the display to 50:
The Search Results will change to reflect the option you have chosen, and the link will change to read Display 20 records per page.
Where there is more than one page of results, The Wellesley Index provides a link to each page. Click a number to display the results listed on that page, or click the Next and Previous links to move between pages of results.
If you have reached the Search Results for a single record type by following a 'More…' link on the combined Search results, you will be able to return to the original combined Search results by clicking the 'Back to Search results' link.
